Chapter I: The drift

You did not reach the top by being wrong often. That is exactly the trap.

Sustained pressure doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t arrive as one bad call — it arrives as a slow drift of slightly worse ones, repeated daily. And the sharper your mind, the better it defends them.

Boards, advisors, a trusted second-in-command: each has a stake in your answer. Few are positioned to tell you, plainly, that the decision is wrong.

An illustration, not data — decision quality under sustained loadThe line drifts steadily down from Month 1 (sharp), through Month 9 (busy) and Month 18 (“fine”), to today.

6×

Across more than 1,000 major business decisions, the process behind a decision mattered roughly six times more than the analysis feeding it. Intelligence was never the bottleneck. The absence of a genuine outside challenge was.

Lovallo & Sibony, McKinsey Quarterly, 2010

Chapter II: The place

The place that made the problem cannot solve it.

It was made at your desk, in your calendar, between your meetings. So we take you somewhere that has been doing this for centuries.

Furnas is a geothermal valley in the east of São Miguel, in the middle of the Atlantic — and our hometown. The ground steams. The water arrives warm from below. You sleep in private cabins tucked into the forest: no hotel corridors, no lobby noise. Remote enough to force a genuine break.

Chapter III: Five days

Body first. Then movement. Then the room.

Breathe, move, connect — usually in that order. Here is one illustrative day; times, sessions and places change with the weather and the cohort.

06:40Breathe · a typical day

Before anyone speaks, the body settles.

Wim Hof Method breathwork and cold exposure with Samir Javed, a Level 3 instructor. A deliberate stress, met calmly — and a return to the state where clarity is available again. You can’t think your way to clarity in a stressed body. The body gets there first.

Breathwork and cold exposure aren’t suitable for everyone. We ask about relevant health information before you take part.

Cyclic sighing: two inhales through the nose, one long exhale through the mouth. Leave the decision for later.

The caldeiras at Lagoa das Furnas. Six hours before lunch, the pots go into the ground.

09:30Move · a typical day

Forest, lake, ridge. Thinking slows down.

Somatic movement and yoga with Carolina Lino, then raw nature: forest paths, thermal pools, trails above crater lakes. Movement that slows thinking, not accelerates it. Your best decision will not happen at your desk.

60%more creative output, on average, walking than sitting — Oppezzo & Schwartz, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2014

Terra Nostra Gardens — thermal water in a subtropical forest.

13:00Connect · a typical day

The room pressure-tests your thinking.

Guided sessions and decision councils with Rob Paynter, twenty years inside C-suites. The coach brings the method. Seven peers ask the questions your usual circle won’t. This is where your decision finally meets an outside challenge — and you still do the deciding. Then cozido das Furnas, slow-cooked underground for six hours, and the conversation carries on at the table.

Cozido das Furnas, out of the ground.

18:30Water · a typical day

Warm water. Then quiet.

Geothermally heated water rising from deep below the earth’s surface. You immerse, and your nervous system stops negotiating. Nobody is checking a phone. Nobody is performing.

Thermal hot springs, Furnas.

21:30Sound · a typical day

Sound closes the day.

Handpan and sound in nature with Jorge Valerio — the bridge between regulation and stillness. Then Nuno Amendoeira’s sound bath, with the Tibetan singing bowls he has worked with since 2005. Outside, the valley supplies its own sound: running water. Natural sounds lower stress, and water sounds showed the strongest effect on health outcomes (Buxton et al., PNAS, 2021).

By now, the decision is a different size. Distance does that.

Chapter IV: The room

Your next decision is only as good as the room you make it in.

And the more senior you get, the smaller that room becomes. Everyone manages you instead of talking to you. So we keep it to eight.

Eight seats around one table Seven seats for people carrying comparable weight, and one marked as yours. Cozido das Furnas six hours underground Yours

Seven others carrying comparable weight. Nothing said here is recorded or repeated.

Group intelligence is real and measurable — and it depends less on the smartest person in the room than on how the group talks: who listens, and whether everyone gets a turn. Woolley et al., Science, 2010

Who holds the room

  • Every facilitator holds a specialism. The programme was built by the founders for themselves first.

Built from direct experience

“Success was supposed to answer the question. It didn’t.”

— Miguel Pestana, co-founder

After senior roles at Google, Burton and other global consumer brands, Miguel Pestana and Tiago Cordeiro researched what the highest performers actually do to sustain clarity — and built a programme around it, in Furnas, the place they are from. They built it for themselves first.

Breath & Cold

Samir Javed

Wim Hof Method — Level 3 Instructor

Our lead practitioner. A founding member of the Wim Hof Method in Australia, Samir has been involved with Wim Hof since 2010 and was the first person from Australasia to learn from him in person. He has spent more than a decade helping establish the method across Australia and Asia.

In Furnas, he guides breathwork and cold exposure designed to regulate the nervous system and support a return to the parasympathetic state — where clarity, calm and better decisions become more accessible.

“The breathwork was amazing. It was the first time for me doing the ice bath — Samir was very supportive. I survived and surprised myself by completing it.”

Sukhbir Dhillon — Melbourne, Australia

“I loved the whole experience. The facilitators were experienced, supportive and great communicators.”

Decision & Integration

Rob Paynter

Executive Coach · Former C-suite executive · CBT

Rob spent twenty years inside C-suites before finding a new purpose in supporting other leaders. He brings more than a decade of coaching, counselling and mentoring to the programme.

Every guest has a private calibration session with Rob 7–14 days before arriving, to set a clear intention. On the island he helps you reflect on what you are carrying — and you leave with practical tools to sustain a stronger state of mind beyond the week.

“Robert clearly draws on a wealth of experience. He has a wonderful coaching style and gave me the freedom and space to take the conversation where I needed to.”

Movement

Carolina Lino

Yoga · Somatic Movement

Carolina uses movement to support clarity and mental focus, with a specialism in somatic practices for high-performance professionals — restoring the body’s capacity to regulate so the mind can follow.

“Carolina gives you great confidence. The feeling was magnificent — goodbye stress, goodbye problems. You just let yourself go.”

Sound in Nature

Jorge Valerio

Handpan · Sound in Nature

Jorge uses movement and sound in nature to help guests transition out of mental noise — the bridge between physical regulation and stillness.

“An experience unlike anything I had encountered before. The handpan in that landscape created a stillness I didn’t know I needed.”

Sound

Nuno Amendoeira

Sound Healing

Since 2005, Nuno has worked with Tibetan singing bowls and other instruments to create meditative spaces where sound supports release and restoration.

His sound bath closes each day’s programme — a space to pause, release, and return to yourself.

“Nuno made the experience really relaxing. It was a special moment for both of us.”

Chapter V: The container

No cameras. No audience. No record.

We never publish a guest’s face or name. Not yours, not anyone’s in your cohort.

One closed cohort of eight. Nothing in the room is filmed or recorded.

The moment a room can be recorded, people perform instead of reset. Privacy is not a courtesy here. It is the condition that makes the work possible.

Chapter VI: After

A retreat sends you home relaxed. A mastermind sends you home with notes. Neither sends you home certain.

The week is built so you leave knowing what you will do about the decision — and fully behind it. Goals change behaviour when you are committed to them, and commitment grows when the goal truly matters to you and you believe you can deliver it. Locke & Latham, American Psychologist, 2002

Chapter VII: Is it for you?

For those who know something is slightly off — and refuse to ignore it.

Thirty seconds, six honest answers. Nothing is sent anywhere. We would rather tell you now if this isn’t the right room.

I’m a founder or senior leader.
I make decisions with six-figure consequences — or larger.
I’m performing well, but I’m saturated — and my decisions show it.
I can step away from control for five days.
I’m willing to engage physically — breath, cold, movement.
I want to face the decision, not escape it.
